Shrubs

Shrubs give form and substance to Tucson landscapes. Shrubs can divide large areas into smaller areas, hide unsightly views, and many shrub plants provide colorful blooms. The following shrubs and bushes are low maintenance, drought-tolerant, and easy to care for. We recommend these shrubs for Tucson, AZ and the arid southwest.

Wooly butterfly bush grows to 5 feet tall and wide, maintaining a dense form with little maintenance. The small, intricate orange flowers attract butterflies.
Mexican Bird Paradise Mexican Bird of Paradise

Caesalpinia mexicana

Native of Northern Mexico. Ferny lush green foliage and bright, yellow flowers. Will tolerate more heat than most. A large shrub that can grow to 15' tall by 12' wide.
Red Bird Paradise Red Bird of Paradise

Caesalpinia pulcherrima

From May through August this tropical-looking shrub produces loads of spectacular flowers. Easy to grow and tolerates nearly all soil types. Grows to 6' tall and wide.
Baja Fairy Duster Baja Fairy Duster

Calliandra californica

Baja Fairy Duster has ferny green foliage, and an open irregular form that lends itself well to natural landscapes. Bright, tufted flowers provide year-round color.
Green Feathery Cassia Green Feathery Cassia

Cassia nemophila

A very tough plant, the Green Feathery Cassia will survive under desert conditions or near the coast. It will even tolerate clay soils if kept dry during the summer.
Hop Bush Hop Bush

Dodonaea viscosa

Hop bush is a fast-growing shrub that has an upright, branching habit that reaches a height of 12-15 feet, with willow-like leaves that are 4" in length. Requires full sunlight.
Chuparosa Chuparosa

Justicia californica

Sprawling shrub 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Succulent green stems with small red, tubular flowers. Full sun. It is Quite Drought Resistant. Humming Birds love this shrub.
Mexican Honeysuckle Mexican Honeysuckle

Justicia spicigera

Medium-sized shrub with fuzzy 3" leaves. Clusters of bright orange, tubular flowers. It is fairly drought tolerant, but does best with extra water and good drainage.
Texas Ranger Texas Ranger

Leucophyllum frutescens

These plants thrive in the hot, muggy monsoon season. Plant Texas rangers in full sun and reflected heat locations. The hotter it gets, the better they like it!
Green Cloud 'Green Cloud' Texas Ranger

Leucophyllum frutes...

Frequent summer flowering, with dark green leaves and large magenta flowers. Green Cloud is one of the largest Texas Rangers. Growing 6-8 feet tall and wide.
Chaparral Sage Chaparral Sage

Salvia clevelandii

The soft gray-green foliage of chaparral sage is extremely aromatic. The flower spikes are this plants most striking feature, with clusters of blue-violet flowers.
Autumn Sage Autumn Sage

Salvia greggii

In the spring and fall this small 3-foot shrub blooms profusely with small hot pink flowers, attracting hummingbirds and humans alike. Very heat and drought-tolerant.

A hybrid with orange flowers and few seed pods, growing to 8-10' tall and wide. Orange Jubilee flowers are trumpet-shaped and appear throughout the warm season.
Mountain Marigold Mountain Marigold

Tagetes lemmonii

Also called Mt. Lemmon Marigold, this Arizona native has finely divided medium green leaves and is very aromatic. Daisy-like flowers early November till hard frost.
