Description
The ice plant is well suited to growing under desert trees and in other partial shade areas. It forms a dense, flat mat of sparkly succulent, green leaves. Plants typically stay under 1 foot tall and 3 feet across. Shocking, pink-purple blooms cover this durable ground cover from midspring to summer, creating a blanket of intense color. Its fast growth and spreading habit is best suited for rock gardens or raised planters, where ice plant can be appreciated up close and personal.
Maintenance
Plant Drosanthemum speciosum 'rosea' in part shade locations in soil with good drainage. It doesn't tolerate foot traffic very well, so plant it away from walkways. Water established ice plants once every week or two, while they are growing and blooming. Reduce watering to every three weeks in the hot summer months. Ice plants are semi-dormant in the hot summer.
