Description

Native to South America, the Argentine mesquite is a beautiful tree with darker bark and a more vigorous growth rate than many other mesquite trees. It ranges in size from 20 feet to 30 feet tall and wide. Argentine mesquite has a wide, spreading crown and narrow, green leaves. It provides a perfect canopy effect if trimmed and kept neat. Creamy yellow flowers are produced from June to September and are followed by seedpods or "beans." There are several hybrids, and many mesquite trees look similar. Argentine Mesquite tree is more open and has a rounder crown than it's close relatives.

Maintenance

Plant Argentine mesquite tree almost anytime, although it establishes best when planted in the fall. Grow mesquite trees in full sun. Water thoroughly when first planted and continue to water every three to four days for the first two or three weeks. Thereafter, water every 7 to 10 days for the first year. Mesquite trees are often overwatered or watered too shallowly resulting in a huge crown and insufficient roots that cause them to fall in high winds. Water established Argentine mesquite trees deeply at long intervals every two weeks in summer and once every month in the winter.
